Welcome! Please give more details in the form below about the prospective student. I support the following areas: piano, theory, aural, sightreading, music history and programme notes (for any instrument or voice, not just piano), university essay writing, and interview preparation. These can build towards exams including diplomas, 11+/13+ auditions, GCSE/A-level, or conservatoire and university degree auditions. I can teach bilingually in English and Chinese. When scheduling permits, I accept ad-hoc requests. I also offer lessons online.
Teaching philosophy
In over 10 years of freelance teaching in London and online, I have worked with students aged 5 to 50+. As a Teaching Assistant at RCM, I have delivered historical musicology lectures, seminars, and tutorials for undergraduates. Trained in Alexander Technique, I emphasise healthy and efficient technical fundamentals, with independent, supple fingerwork, flexible wrist and arm assistance, and full body engagement to produce good sound. For students who seek all-rounded musicianship, I also integrate theory and history in an applied manner and train aural and sight-reading skills, which are often neglected. I have taught several students over the years who work full-time and juggle their love for music-making with their careers.
My students have a commitment to musical appreciation and self-improvement. I believe in a comprehensive and systematic approach. Where appropriate, I encourage students with interest and potential to participate in performance festivals and competitions to diversify their development. I believe in honest and two-way communication with my students and/or their parents, and encourage parents of younger students to observe lessons, so we may understand each other and our music better.
